Northern Nigeria I must say is one of the most beautiful parts of our country. However, we fail to see the things about our surroundings that may be of interest to others. It would be really beautiful if we could step back and take a look at it from a new perspective.
Presently it is truly sad the perspective we and the world at large has of Northern Nigeria. Of course I remember the wonderful tales of the North I used to hear. Their unrelenting hospitality, artistic inclinations, music, culture and of course their culinary skills.
As a matter of fact I still believe there is so much more to the North. For this reason I wrote out a few wonderful things to see.
Mambilla Plateau ( Taraba)
Mambilla Plateau is located in the highlands of Taraba state, Nigeria. With an average elevation of about 1,524 meters (5,000 ft) above sea level, Mambilla Plateau is one of the highest in Nigeria. In addition , one of the most amazing sights to behold. Regrettably I haven’t been privileged to witness this wonder in person. However from the photos and tales from trusted travel lovers, it is definitely bucket list worthy.
Yankari Game Reserve (Bauchi)
Yankari National Park is located in Bauchi State, in North Eastern Nigeria and is a popular tourism destination in the country. It is located about 225 km east of the city of Jos and is the country’s richest wildlife oasis. The reserve is home to the largest surviving Elephant population in Nigeria and one of the largest in West Africa.
The Tranquil ambience of the reserve cannot be over exaggerated.
Farin Ruwa Falls is a waterfall found in the North central region of Nigeria. Farin Ruwa is a description of the nature of the falls by the local inhabitants of the Farin Ruwa area. The first time I heard about this was from an old Nigerian Movie. Another reason I learned the word “cascade” 😉
The falls gradually turns white in color as a result of the height covered by the falls during its descent.
Kajuru Castle (Kaduna)
This majestic castle is not only that by name. Located in Kajuru village , Kaduna, this castle is built in medieval style. The aesthetics, the view and the sheer serenity of this place is unbelievable. Perfect place for you and yours to feel like royals.
Wikki Warm Spring (Bauchi)
The Wikki Warm Spring is the biggest of the four warm springs in Yankari. It is located in the Yankari National Park.
With its clear waters and tranquil environs, there is no doubt that mother nature didn’t bless this place.
Emir’s Palace (Bauchi)
The Emir’s palace in Bauchi is one of the most sensational features of Bauchi state.
It was built by the famous Northern legend “Babban Gwani” ; a master Builder of the 19th century. The Bauchi palace is just one of his many monumental structures in Northern Nigeria, Babban Gwani built mosques and palaces in Kano, Katsina, Zaria, to mention a few.
It is no surprise how artistically inclined people of the North are. From the sculptures, figurines, buildings , instruments and the aesthetics of their architecture.
Arts and crafts of Northern Nigeria are definitely one the most striking to ever come across.
These are just a few of the wonderful sights and gems the North.
I do believe there is so much more to see and experience about the places we call “home”; North, South, Middle belt , East or West.
